The WIGGWIGG apps for iPhone and Android

The iPhone and iPad app is on the App Store. On Android, the app is on Google Play, and you can also download a variant without Google straight from here.

Pick your phone. On Android, if yours has the Play Store, take the Google Play variant; if not, or if you would rather nothing went through Google, take the one without Google. You do not need a <span class="brand-name">WIGGWIGG</span> account to install either one.

For an ordinary Android phone. Notifications travel through Google servers, with their content encrypted.

This variant follows Google Play's rules: digital goods are bought on the website, where you choose your country to see available purchases and applicable taxes.

No Google services required. Notifications travel through our server, at the cost of a permanent entry in your notification shade.

Since 0.13.0, the icon of the variant without Google has a white background on your phone. With themed icons, that white background disappears, and the icon of the variant without Google shows a short bar above the W instead. The icon's shape and colours can vary from phone to phone.

No preview build is newer than the stable build right now. Take the stable build.

Verify, install, understand

On Android there are two things to choose: the route your notifications take and, if you take the variant without Google, how finished the build is.

Verify the file before installing it

Two checks are worth doing. The first confirms the file arrived intact, the second confirms it carries the signature we publish here.

1. Compare the fingerprint

On macOS or Linux, run the command below in the folder where the file landed, then compare the result with the fingerprint under "SHA-256 fingerprint" on the card you downloaded from. If the two match, the file is intact.

2. Verify the signature

The fingerprint proves the file was not modified along the way. The signature confirms it was signed with the key whose fingerprint is published here. The certificate must match the signing fingerprint shown below for the build you downloaded.

Install the file on Android
  1. 1 Open the downloaded file. Android will block the install the first time and show you a Settings button.
  2. 2 Tap it, then allow your browser to install applications.
  3. 3 Go back and open the file again. The installer shows the application name, then you install.
  4. 4 Once that is done, remove the permission you just gave your browser. You can give it back when you need to.

Android shows a warning for any application that comes from somewhere other than the Play Store, even a signed one. That is normal and it says nothing about the file itself.

Preview or production: which build to take

This one is mostly about maturity. The encryption is the same in both builds. The preview build does allow screenshots and screen recordings, though, while the stable build blocks them.

New things first. In exchange it is rough now and then, and we count on you to tell us.
Production (stable)
The stable build, the one we publish when it is ready for everyone.

The preview moves fast: new things land there first, and so do the rough edges. The stable build changes less often.

What you are signing up for

  • You see new things first.

  • There are still bugs, and during Early Access we may change how the app looks and what it does along the way.

  • The encryption is the same as in the stable build, and you use your real account, not a sandbox.

  • Installing the preview earns you no perk, no discount, and no special price. We want your opinion, not your money.

With Google Play or without Google: which variant to take

If your phone has the Play Store, take the Google Play variant. If you are on a de-Googled system, or you want nothing going through Google, take the variant without Google.

What mainly sets the two variants apart is which way the signal that wakes your phone travels, and one thing Google Play imposes on us. The Google Play variant installs and updates through Google Play; the variant without Google downloads from here, as a stable or preview build, and tells you about updates itself.

Android with Google Play

For an ordinary Android phone, the kind that already has the Play Store on it.

The little signal that wakes your phone up travels through Google servers.

The content of the notification travels encrypted inside that signal, so Google cannot read it. Google does see that a notification arrived on your device, when, and what kind it was: a text message, a missed call, a billing notice.

Nothing extra to do. No permanent entry in your notification shade, no connection to keep open.

Android without Google (de-Googled)

For GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, LineageOS, or an ordinary phone if you would rather nothing went through Google.

The same wake signal travels through our own server instead of Google.

Google is no longer in the picture for notifications. We are the ones who see the signal go by, and the content stays encrypted exactly the same way.

The app keeps its own connection open at all times. Android then requires a quiet but permanent entry in your notification shade, and it uses a bit more battery.

The difference Google Play imposes

On the Google Play variant we are not allowed to sell you digital goods like Vault Premium inside the app: the store requires us to use its own checkout, so the app does not show them. The variant without Google does show them. Either way, you can buy them on the website, where you choose your country to see available purchases and applicable taxes, and they work the same way in the app. Phone service is untouched: numbers, usage packs, and add-ons bill as a telecom service.

On iPhone and iPad

The choice between the Google Play variant and the without-Google variant only applies on Android. On iPhone and iPad, install and update the app through the App Store. The signals that wake the app for notifications travel through Apple. The web app remains available in your browser.

Staying up to date

The variant without Google tells you itself

It checks for a newer build roughly every half hour, and every time you bring it back to the screen. When there is one, it tells you and offers to install it. You can postpone or skip a build.

To find out whether there is a new build, the app reads the build list published on our server.

Obtainium, if you prefer

Obtainium is an open-source Android application that watches the downloads of several applications and tells you when a new build comes out. Handy if you already manage your applications that way, or if you want a tool that lives outside ours.

The simplest way: with a button

On the phone where Obtainium is already installed (it is available on F-Droid and on GitHub), tap the button for the build you want to follow. Obtainium opens with everything it needs to follow that build only, and asks you to confirm before adding anything. On a computer, or if nothing opens, follow the steps below instead.

Was Obtainium already following the variant without Google before 0.13.0?

Since 0.13.0, the variant without Google is a separate app, and Obtainium will not move from the old one to the new one on its own. To switch, add the new one with the button above that matches your build, sign in to your account in the new one, sign out of the old one, then remove it from Obtainium and from your phone.

Installed from Google Play?

Update through Google Play, not through Obtainium or a file from this page. The only files we offer here are builds of the variant without Google: a file from here would give you that variant, not an update to the Google Play app.
