On Android there are two things to choose, and they have nothing to do with each other: how finished the build is, and the route your notifications take.
Two checks are worth doing. The first confirms the file arrived intact, the second confirms we are the ones who signed it.
1. Compare the fingerprint
On macOS or Linux, run the command below in the folder where the file landed, then compare the result with the fingerprint under "SHA-256 fingerprint" on the card you downloaded from. If the two match, the file is intact.

2. Verify the signature
The fingerprint proves the file was not modified along the way. The signature proves it came from us. The certificate must match this one.

Android shows a warning for any application that comes from somewhere other than the Play Store, even a signed one. That is normal and it says nothing about the file itself.
This one is about maturity, not privacy. Both builds behave identically on that front.
The preview moves fast: new things land there first, and so do the rough edges. The stable build changes less often.
What you are signing up for

There are still bugs, and during Early Access we may change how the app looks and what it does along the way.
The encryption is the same as in the stable build. It is the same application, not a sandbox.
Installing the preview earns you no perk, no discount, and no special price. We want your opinion, not your money.
If your phone has the Play Store, take the Google Play variant. If you are on a de-Googled system, or you want nothing going through Google, take the variant without Google.
It is the same app either way, same app id, same updates. What changes is the route taken by the signal that wakes your phone, and one thing Google Play imposes on us.

The little signal that wakes your phone up travels through Google servers.
The content of the notification travels encrypted inside that signal, so Google cannot read it. Google does see that a notification arrived on your device, when, and what kind it was: a text message, a missed call, a billing notice.
Nothing extra to do. No permanent entry in your notification shade, no connection to keep open.
For GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, LineageOS, or an ordinary phone if you would rather nothing went through Google.
The same wake signal travels through our own server instead of Google.
Google is no longer in the picture for notifications. We are the ones who see the signal go by, and the content stays encrypted exactly the same way.
The app keeps its own connection open at all times. Android then requires a quiet but permanent entry in your notification shade, and it uses a bit more battery.
On the Google Play variant we are not allowed to sell you digital goods like Vault Premium inside the app: the store requires us to use its own checkout. The restriction travels with the file, not with where you download it: the Google Play variant we offer directly from here follows the Play Store's rules, so it does not show them either. The variant without Google does show them. Either way, you can buy them on the website, where you choose your country to see available purchases and applicable taxes, and they work the same way in the app. Phone service is untouched: numbers, usage packs, and add-ons bill as a telecom service.
The choice between the Google Play variant and the without-Google variant only applies on Android: on iPhone and iPad, notifications always travel through Apple. There is no public way to install the application on iPhone right now. The App Store version is on the way, and until then the web application works in your iPhone browser.
It checks for a newer build roughly every half hour, every time you bring it back to the screen, and immediately when we publish something. When there is one, it tells you and offers to install it. You can postpone or skip a build.
What counts is the list published on our server, never the notification message itself.
Obtainium is an open-source Android application that watches the downloads of several applications and tells you when a new build comes out. Handy if you already manage your applications that way, or if you want a tool that lives outside ours.
